Polyalkylimide gel safe and effective for treatment of facial lipoatrophy
A small, open-label study has found that injections of polyalkylimide gel (Bio-Alcamid) safely and effectively reduced the visible symptoms of facial lipoatrophy in HIV-positive patients, and improved self-reported anxiety, depression and overall quality of life. The study, performed at a clinic in Toronto, was reported in the May 31st edition of AIDS.

One of the most prominent and challenging side effects associated with HIV is lipoatrophy—a condition that causes erratic fat production of cells and the unequal distribution of fat in the body. Manifestations of lipoatrophy can vary from excessive accumulation of fat around the abdomen to severe fat and muscle wasting in the arms, legs, buttocks, and face.
